In lieu Sites and Treaty Fishing Access SitesWhen the Columbia River dams were constructed, lands were set aside to replace the flooded traditional tribal fishing sites. These locations are called “in lieu” or treaty fishing access sites (TFAS). They are for the exclusive use of the Yakama, Umatilla, Warm Springs, and Nez Perce tribal members to engage in their traditional fishing activities. Visitors who are not members of one of these tribes may enter these sites to purchase fish from tribal fishers during legal commercial fishing periods.
