Coho Reintroduction in the Umatilla
River
The
current Umatilla River Coho reintroduction program started in 1987
with a 1.0 million smolt release of Tanner Creek stock from Cascade
Hatchery. The program was increased to 1.5 million smolts in 1995
and has remained the same since. Smolts have been unmarked with representative
production evaluation mark groups and have been acclimated prior to
release since 2000. A number of changes are proposed for the program
beginning in 2010; release number is being reduced to 1.0 million,
smolts will be ad-clipped with an no clip + CWT evaluation group,
and the broodstock is being proposed for transition to Umatilla River
returning adults.
